The Gears of War E-Day Dead Serious achievement is a long-term mastery challenge spanning Campaign, Versus, Player Level progression, and all four launch Horde Siege classes. On Xbox, the published requirement is to reach 100% Campaign completion on Insane, earn 25,000 Versus kills, reach maximum Player Level, and maximize all four classes. The original Xbox listing awards 85 points.
Do not automatically apply that exact Xbox wording to Steam. The official September 30 launch update confirmed that the platform achievement lists differ: Xbox removed The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day, while that completion achievement remains on Steam. Check the live Dead Serious description in your Steam client before planning the Campaign portion, because the September 30 launch notes do not reproduce Steam's current Dead Serious wording.
Dead Serious requirements by platform
| Platform | Confirmed requirement or limitation | What to follow |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | 100% Campaign on Insane, 25,000 Versus kills, maximum Player Level, and maximum level with four classes | Use the live Xbox achievement tracker together with the four-part checklist below |
| Steam | The official launch update confirms a different overall achievement list because the all-achievements completion achievement remains on Steam | Read the current Dead Serious text in Steam and use it as the authority for any Campaign wording that differs from Xbox |
The September 9 achievement announcement is useful for the Xbox checklist, but the September 30 launch update is newer and establishes that platform differences are intentional. A guide, screenshot, or copied list that labels every requirement as universal may therefore be outdated even when most of its numbers remain correct.
The four Xbox objectives can be worked on independently. You do not need to finish them in the order shown by the achievement description, and there is no supported time limit. Treat Dead Serious as a progress plan rather than a single endgame action.
Xbox Dead Serious checklist
Complete the Campaign requirement
Xbox describes this portion as 100% Campaign on Insane. The safest route is to complete every Act on Insane while also clearing the Campaign's tracked side content and hidden-item categories. Several separate achievements provide useful completion checks:
- Today We Are Canceling the Apocalypse confirms that all Campaign Acts have been completed on Insane.
- Side Piece tracks completion of all secondary objectives on any difficulty.
- Relax. I'm the Map. tracks every Hard Case.
- Memories From E-Day tracks every Campaign collectible.
- Quartermaster tracks every Supply Cache item unlocked in the Campaign.
- For Whom the Bell Tolls requires completing the Campaign on Insane, completing all side missions, and finding all hidden items.
These achievements are practical checkpoints, but do not replace the Dead Serious progress display. The published description does not break “100% Campaign” into a complete numeric formula, so verify that Dead Serious itself advances after the related Campaign work is finished.
A clean approach is to use an initial lower-difficulty run to learn the five-Act Campaign and record missed objectives, then perform the Insane completion with a checklist. If you already completed some secondary objectives or found hidden items on another difficulty, inspect your retained Campaign progress before repeating them. The individual side-content achievements explicitly allow any difficulty, while the Xbox Dead Serious description attaches Insane to the overall Campaign requirement.
Before leaving an Act or chapter, confirm that the relevant secondary objectives, Hard Cases, collectibles, and Supply Cache unlocks are recorded. The War Journal records at least secondary-objective and Hard Case progress. If an encounter or objective becomes blocked during an unusually long uninterrupted session, the official launch notes recommend reloading a checkpoint. That advice addresses a known launch issue; it does not justify deleting saves or starting the entire Campaign again.
Earn 25,000 kills in Versus
The Versus portion requires 25,000 kills, matching the separate HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL STAR… achievement. Horde Siege enemies do not contribute to this stated Versus total, even though Horde Siege has its own 50,000-enemy achievement.
The requirement says Versus, not Ranked. Versus Ranked is scheduled to open on October 13, 2026, so it is unavailable on the October 10 reference date. Social Versus contains 4v4 Quickplay, Player vs Bot playlists, rotating experiences, and limited-time modes, but the published launch information does not specify which of those playlists count toward the achievement.
Use a controlled progress check before committing to one playlist:
- Record the current Versus-kill progress shown by the platform, if a counter is available.
- Complete one full match in the playlist you intend to use.
- Allow the result and achievement service to update.
- Compare the progress value with your actual kills from that match.
- Continue only if the counter advances as expected.
Do not assume that Combat Training, Campaign kills, Horde Siege kills, private activities planned for a future update, or Player vs Bot kills qualify. The published mode descriptions confirm those activities exist, but they do not confirm that their eliminations count toward Dead Serious. When no numeric platform counter is visible, keep a simple session log and favor clearly competitive Versus matches rather than relying on an unverified shortcut.
Because 25,000 is a lifetime-scale target, consistency matters more than an unsupported “fastest” method. Complete matches, use the modes you can sustain, and check progress periodically. This also generates Player XP, letting the Versus grind contribute to the separate Player Level requirement.
Reach maximum Player Level
Maximum Player Level does not mean reaching level 100 once. Player progression consists of 100 levels followed by four Re-Ups. Each Re-Up resets Player Level to 1 and grants an exclusive reward. Across the initial run and four Re-Ups, maximum progression represents five runs to level 100, or 500 cumulative levels.
Use these milestones to distinguish partial progress from the final requirement:
| Milestone | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Level 100 before the first Re-Up | One level run completed; this is not maximum Player Level |
| First Re-Up | Satisfies the separate Field Service achievement when its stated conditions are met |
| Four available Re-Ups completed | The reset sequence is complete, but the last level run still matters |
| Level 100 on the final Re-Up | Maximum Player Level; the game awards the Gears 2-inspired wings |
Player XP comes from multiplayer matches and weekly challenges in Horde Siege and Versus. The launch update adjusted Player XP to align progression more closely across those two multiplayer modes, but no verified XP-per-hour benchmark is available. Combine Player Level progress with the 25,000 Versus kills and four-class grind instead of treating it as an isolated farm.

The Profile Customization screen shows a player-level badge and medal challenges. It does not show a Re-Up counter or demonstrate maximum Player Level.
Check the profile screen before using a Re-Up so you know which cycle you are entering. The wings are the clearest documented endpoint: they are awarded after reaching level 100 on the last Re-Up, not merely when the fourth reset begins.
Max all four launch Horde Siege classes
Dead Serious requires maximum level with all four launch classes: Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic. Each class has 30 progression levels. Class XP is separate from Player XP, so increasing account-level progression does not automatically finish every class.
Track the classes individually:
| Class | Maximum level | Completion check |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | 30 | Confirm the class level reaches 30 |
| Breacher | 30 | Confirm the class level reaches 30 |
| Marksman | 30 | Confirm the class level reaches 30 |
| Medic | 30 | Confirm the class level reaches 30 |
Every completed Horde Siege mission grants Class XP to the class used for that mission. Horde Siege offers Blitz missions with one or two objectives, standard Siege missions with multiple objectives, and ten-wave Horde missions. The published playlist descriptions provide approximate session lengths, but they do not establish a verified fastest Class XP route. Choose mission types you can complete reliably and rotate away from a class when it reaches 30.

The class menu shows the four independent Horde Siege tracks.
Do not confuse class levels with Weapon Mods, Weapon Parts, Energy, Player XP, or Coins. Those systems overlap during Horde Siege, but Dead Serious specifically calls for maximum class levels. The separate Siege Specialist achievement is the most useful checkpoint because it names the same four classes and requires all of them to reach maximum level.
A practical order for completing Dead Serious
A low-waste route overlaps the three multiplayer objectives while keeping the Campaign checklist separate:
- Complete a Campaign planning run. Learn the chapters, clear as much side content as possible, and record anything still missing.
- Finish the required Insane Campaign work. On Xbox, confirm the Insane completion achievement and the related side-content checkpoints rather than relying on the end credits alone. On Steam, follow the live Steam wording if it differs.
- Rotate through all four Horde Siege classes. Keep the levels reasonably balanced until you know which objectives and class tools suit you, then finish each class at level 30.
- Use both Horde Siege and Versus for Player XP. This keeps maximum Player Level moving while you work on the mode-specific goals.
- Maintain steady Versus progress. Test that your chosen playlist advances the counter, then accumulate the 25,000 confirmed kills across regular sessions.
- Finish the final Re-Up cycle. Continue until you reach level 100 after all four Re-Ups and receive the wings.
- Audit all four Dead Serious components. Check the platform tracker, Campaign milestones, Versus total, final Player Level, and all four class levels before assuming the achievement is merely delayed.
This order is flexible. If Versus is your preferred mode, begin the kill count immediately. If you play mostly Horde Siege, rotate classes early so one favorite class does not absorb Class XP after already reaching level 30.
Progress checks when Dead Serious has not unlocked
If every requirement appears complete, check each category separately before treating the achievement as broken:
- Reopen the live Dead Serious description on the platform where you are playing. Xbox and Steam should not be assumed to use identical Campaign wording.
- Confirm that the Versus counter says 25,000 rather than relying on total multiplayer eliminations from mixed modes.
- Verify that Player Level is 100 on the final Re-Up. Level 100 before the first reset, or immediately after the fourth Re-Up, is not the documented endpoint.
- Open every Horde Siege class and confirm Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic each show level 30.
- On Xbox, inspect the Insane Campaign and completion-related achievement states. Credits on Insane alone do not demonstrate that the published 100% condition is satisfied.
- Allow completed multiplayer matches and the platform achievement service to synchronize before repeating a long requirement.
Avoid deleting local or cloud saves as a generic troubleshooting step. The official launch notes do not recommend it for achievement synchronization, and doing so risks turning a display or service delay into lost progress.
Dead Serious rewards
Dead Serious unlocks more than its platform achievement entry. The official launch announcement says players who earn it also receive an exclusive Medal, Player Title, Banner, Emblem, and Icon, plus a Legendary Character skin. The skin is scheduled to debut at the start of Season 2 rather than being presented as an immediate Season 1 item.
Achievement-linked rewards cannot be bypassed with Coins or Iron while their acquisition method is active. Completing Dead Serious is therefore the documented route to this reward set. If the achievement unlocks before the Legendary skin becomes available, wait for the announced Season 2 debut instead of treating its Season 1 absence as evidence that the achievement failed.
