The Gears of War: E-Day open beta is no longer available. Its public weekend ended on August 17, 2026, and the full game launched on October 6, 2026. As of October 9, there is no active October beta: the August test and the released game are separate products and access periods.
The beta ran in two stages. The first was an early-access weekend for eligible pre-order customers and Game Pass members. The second was an open weekend that did not require a pre-order or Game Pass. Both stages offered the same limited selection of multiplayer content, and neither included the complete launch game.

If you find an old store result, installation button, beta client, announcement, or social post, check its dates before acting on it. The official instructions describing how to search for “Gears Beta” were written for the August testing windows. They do not establish a new test, permanent free access, or access to the released game.
The two beta windows at a glance
The early-access beta began on August 6 at 12:00 p.m. PT and ended on August 10 at 10:00 a.m. PT. Eligibility came from one of the following routes:
- A qualifying pre-order on Xbox Series X|S.
- A qualifying pre-order through the Xbox app on PC.
- A qualifying Steam pre-order.
- An active Game Pass Ultimate membership.
- An active PC Game Pass membership.
The public open beta began on August 13 at 12:00 p.m. PT and ended on August 17 at 10:00 a.m. PT. This second window was open to players on eligible platforms regardless of pre-order status. The official beta FAQ explicitly stated that Game Pass was not required for Weekend 2.
That public-weekend rule should not be extended to the released game. It described a temporary beta event, not the ongoing requirements for online multiplayer after launch. Likewise, early access to the beta was not the same as the Premium Edition’s later retail early-access period.

Both beta weekends contained the same playable selection. Early-access participants could start sooner, but they did not receive a separate second set of modes for Weekend 1. The public weekend then made that same beta content available more broadly.
What was playable in the beta
The multiplayer beta featured Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus. Horde Siege was presented as a larger-scale evolution of the series’ cooperative wave-survival mode, while Versus covered competitive player-versus-player matches.
The beta represented only a subset of the content planned for launch. It was intended to gather feedback and expose technical problems before the October release. It should therefore not be used as a complete description of the final game’s maps, modes, performance, progression, accessibility features, or balance.
This distinction also matters when reading beta impressions. Several features and technical limits were explicitly described as temporary, while stability, matchmaking, hit detection, controller recognition, and other systems were still being adjusted. A beta-specific limitation does not prove that the same limitation exists in the released build.
How beta installation worked
Installation depended on the platform and the player’s access route during the active event.
Xbox digital pre-orders
The beta client was supposed to appear automatically under My Games and Apps on an Xbox console or under My Library in the Xbox app on PC. Players who could not find it were instructed to search the store for Gears Beta.
Game Pass early access
Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members could search for Gears Beta through Game Pass and download the separate client for the early-access weekend.
Steam pre-orders
For qualifying Steam pre-orders, the beta client was supposed to be added automatically to the customer’s Steam Library.
Physical and Collector’s Edition pre-orders
Physical-edition customers were expected to receive an access code by email from the retailer. Collector’s Edition customers were also supposed to receive an emailed code, whether their order was associated with Xbox or Steam. The official instructions advised checking the spam folder first and then contacting the Xbox Game Studios Shop customer-service route if a Collector’s Edition code had not arrived.
Public weekend
During Weekend 2, players could search for Gears Beta on Xbox, in the Xbox app for PC, or on Steam without a pre-order. Those instructions were time-limited. Finding a leftover beta listing now does not mean its servers, matchmaking, reward challenges, or free access remain active.
Every beta reward and its unlock condition
The beta offered six reward goals. Players had to perform the required action during the beta; purchasing the released game afterward does not retroactively complete those challenges.
| Reward | Beta unlock condition |
|---|---|
| Epic Blast Damage Mags Character Skin | Reach Player Level 20 |
| Rare Crush the Bug Weapon Skin Set | Extract from Horde Siege eight times on Infantry difficulty or higher |
| Crush the Bug Banner | Get 25 headshots |
| Crush the Bug Emblem | Perform 10 revives |
| Crush the Bug Icon | Perform five Prototype Lancer chainsaw executions |
| Open Beta Medal and First in the Fight Title | Launch the Multiplayer Beta |

The official rules said completed challenge rewards would unlock for use in the beta and later appear in the player’s inventory at launch. That promise applies to rewards actually earned while the event was active. The available information does not confirm delivery for any individual account, so an account-specific missing reward should not be treated as proof that everyone received or lost the item.
The easiest reward required only launching the multiplayer beta. The other rewards depended on progression or specific actions. Merely downloading the client did not satisfy the level, extraction, headshot, revive, or execution requirements.
What progress carried over
Progress behaved differently between the two beta weekends and between the beta and the released game.
Between Weekend 1 and Weekend 2, the following carried over:
- Challenge and Medal progress.
- Rewards already unlocked.
- Class progression.
- Player Level.
At launch, the carryover was narrower. The Beta Player Title, Beta Medal, and earned beta challenge rewards were designated to remain available. Class progression, Player Level, and other Medal progress were reset rather than transferred into the full release.
This means an early-access participant could continue an unfinished beta challenge during the public weekend, but could not preserve general class or account leveling as a head start in the retail game. It also means screenshots showing a high beta Player Level do not establish the same level after launch.
Steam accounts and cross-platform squad invites
A Microsoft or Xbox account was not required simply to play the beta on Steam. Account linking became relevant when a Steam player wanted to send a cross-platform squad invitation.
During the beta, the linking flow started from the social pane on the main menu. The player could use the Link Account option in the upper-left corner and follow the sign-in process. This was a functional distinction: normal Steam access and cross-platform social features did not have identical account requirements.
The beta also listed account-linking trouble among its known issues. Steam Machines were specifically identified as unable to complete account linking at that time. On Windows, using one account in the Xbox app and a different account in the Microsoft Store could block online play. Those were beta-era troubleshooting details and should not automatically be attributed to the current retail build.
Beta-only PC requirements and known issues
The published beta PC specifications were explicitly labeled as beta specifications, not final launch specifications. They are useful for understanding the old test client but should not replace the released game’s current requirements.

An SSD was required for the beta. Mechanical hard drives were unsupported and could cause severe loading problems, missing assets, stuttering, and crashes. The beta guidance also required current graphics drivers, with these minimum listed versions:
- AMD driver 26.7.1.
- NVIDIA driver 610.74 or newer.
- Intel driver 101.8864.
The NVIDIA requirement was strict during the test: the beta would not launch on an older NVIDIA driver. The official notes also advised Intel users to update their system BIOS.
Several other PC limitations were documented:
- Older OBS versions could cause a crash; the beta guidance required OBS 29.0.0 or later.
- Intel Arc GPUs could recompile shaders on every launch, increasing startup time.
- Intel Arc A580 and B580 performance could drop substantially when Resizable BAR was disabled. The suggested check was to confirm that ReBAR and Above 4G Decoding were enabled in the BIOS.
- Norton, Comodo, and similar third-party antivirus tools could incorrectly block game executables.
- Switching display modes could sometimes leave the game short of filling the entire display.
- Frame generation was temporarily disabled.
- Frame rate was temporarily capped at 150 FPS.
- Some third-party controllers were not recognized on Steam.
For the controller issue, the beta-era workaround was to disconnect mouse and keyboard USB devices and make sure the intended controller was connected before launching. This was never presented as a universal controller configuration for the released game.
Aim Assist also had a mode-specific clarification: it affected Campaign and Horde Siege, but not Versus. The note concerned unclear beta settings text rather than a promise that every related setting would remain unchanged at launch.
Beta error codes and workarounds
The beta FAQ documented three named error groups. These steps belong to the old test environment, so use them to interpret beta records rather than as proof of the cause of a current retail error.
drone-snub
Weekend 2 included mitigations for the drone-snub error. The beta’s network-port requirement changed from UDP 443 to UDP 3074. Players who continued to see the error were instructed to confirm that the required Xbox network ports were open.
quentin-ephyra
The quentin-ephyra authentication error was associated with Xbox Quick Resume. The published workaround was to disable Quick Resume in the Xbox system settings.
bryce-vigil and gill-gutpuncher
The bryce-vigil and gill-gutpuncher errors were linked to a mismatch between the device’s date and time settings and local time. On Windows, the recommended action was to open Date & Time settings and use Sync Now.
The beta also warned players to expect crashes, performance dips, cover problems, visual popping, streaming problems, out-of-bounds issues, and incomplete accessibility behavior. On Xbox Series S, extended Horde Siege sessions in Quality Mode could produce hitching. Fully quitting and restarting the game was the temporary workaround.
Weekend 2 shipped improvements for hit-detection delays, stability, crashes, connection timeouts, matchmaking, anti-cheat protection, account linking, third-party controllers, and Xbox Series S hitching. Prototype Lancer base damage was increased while its perfect-reload damage was reduced. These were changes inside an evolving test build, not a complete launch patch history.
What to do after the beta
There is no remaining beta-registration step for the August event. If your goal is to play now, use the released game rather than relying on an old beta client or expired access instructions. Gears of War: E-Day launched on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with Steam also included in the official release information.
Do not assume that beta ownership grants the retail game, that a beta pre-order route is still available, or that an old beta reward can still be earned. The test’s free public access ended on August 17, while the retail release followed on October 6. Those dates are the clearest way to distinguish an archived beta page from current game access.
